10 SEO Mistakes That Must Be Avoided When Blogging

In any blogging campaign, the SEO or search engine optimization is a process necessary to achieve success. This is why the process should be properly implemented because it is complex and intricate. There are several reasons for this but the main reason is the algorithm that Google uses. The algorithm account for certain factors when ranking a blog or web page. From time to time, Google changes the algorithm.

Up to this day, there are numerous myths about SEO. Many of them are very difficult to determine if true or not. However, there are mistakes that you should not commit to avoid failure in blogging.

Don’t duplicate content

There are many bloggers who write about the same topic using keywords that they say are different but are actually the same. For example, the keywords ‘making money with your YouTube account’ is essentially similar with ‘make money on YouTube’. Even if you create and use different pages for these keywords, no value will be added to your site.

Don’t buy links

If your website is already known, it can have a boost for a short time when you buy links. However, this is still risky. The experts of Google’s search engine flag paid links. Though they won’t instantly notice it, the links you bought will still end up flagged sooner or later. Google’s special team and bots have the task of searching for linking patterns that are questionable and they do it every day.

If you bought more than 500 links and pointed them to your blog or website within one day, expect that some of the links will be flagged because Google think these are part a linking activity that is irregular. Using links from categories that are totally unrelated will also be suspected. With these, the manual method of linking is still the best way to grow your blog. Even the pace is very slow, you won’t get flagged and will have higher chances of slowly going to the top of the results page.

Don’t leave automated title tags

When search engines do their ranking, they also consider the title tag. You should always keep your titles short. They should not be more than 60 characters and should be optimized to successfully aim at your focus. The mistake beginner bloggers commit is the lengthy title using a lot of words.

If you write a post, for example, with the title ‘What is a Business Blog and How Do I Create It?’ you must always bear in mind that titles should focus on keywords. Thus, a better title for the post is ‘What is Business Blog?’ because ‘business blog’ is most likely a keyword. You can use the keyword tool Google Adwords to determine the popularity of the keywords you are considering. You have to change some keywords for you to enjoy better ranking in the results page of different search engines.

Don’t chase PageRank

PageRank is important in the success of any website. However, you should not solely rely on it because there are 199 other indicators like PageRank that Google uses when ranking websites. With this, you have to focus on what Google recommends, which is focusing on relevancy, ROI and analytics.

Don’t use free hosting blogs

TypePad, Blogger, and other free hosting services offer blogs an excellent value and decent platform. The thing is, they are not practical because they don’t allow for installations of themes, Plugins and other types of extensions that can help you achieve positive SEO results.

Do SEO correctly

There are many ways that you can use to optimize every post that you do for search engines. When using link building for blogs, don’t link to the front page only. You should also build links that point to your most popular content. You also have to always bear in mind that SEO is a continuing process, which means that there are always updates about how to successfully do it. So, always watch out for new knowledge about the process. Read guides or articles by Google’s Matt Cutts and other qualified authors.

Don’t forget the ALT tag

When you post images, you should use keywords to optimize them. For this, use the ALT tag to successfully insert a keyword or keywords to the image. You may also use the keyword as filename to increase your chances of ranking high. It has been reported that WebCEO doesn’t put much weight on ALT tags. However, Yahoo, Bing, AOL and other search engines do.

Don’t write short content

Short articles are often rejected because they don’t encourage loyalty from the readers. Also, search engines put emphasis on lengthy posts because short ones are considered low in terms of quality. A lot of websites have suffered because the posts re all containing little content.

Don’t do keyword stuffing

Keyword stuffing is one of the most common mistakes in SEO. It won’t do your search rankings any good and it is considered unethical. If you want to optimize a lot of keywords, don’t use them in the same page. Every keyword must have its own page to truly optimize them for SEO rankings. Don’t use duplicate or hidden texts. Don’t ever manipulate Google and other search engines.

Don’t sacrifice, look for content

Aside from great content, the design of the blog or website is another factor that visitors consider. This is why you should not overdesign the page. Aside from the fact that it won’t attract visitors, too many graphics will also slow down your page, which will irritate viewers and will cause them to leave.

There are Flash sites that sacrifice the page just to have sounds and moving images. Even if it will make the page attractive, search engines won’ be able to speedily crawl to your page and rank it accordingly.

Aside from these, there are other mistakes that will pop out. The new ones include not updating of the sitemap, broken 404 images, grammatical errors, generic posts descriptions, and others. With these commonly committed mistakes, it would pay to review your blogs.
