How to Recover from a Google Penalty

There was a time when it was relatively easy to rank highly in Google’s search rankings. Now, if there were no notifications and the only signs you got are a sudden and severe drop in organic search rankings, traffic, and visibility, then there is a very strong likelihood that you have been slapped with an algorithmic penalty. Unfortunately, finding out the actual violation is not that easy as you will have to carefully analyze your data and compare it with the historical changes in Google’s search algorithms.

Recovering from a Google penalty includes doing some things to rectify the violation. For example, if you were able to determine that the Google penalty is due to a highly suspicious link profile, then you simply need to work on creating more reliable and trustworthy linkages outside your website. This is a classic Penguin penalty. You will need to clean up your backlinks to make sure that the websites you are linking to are, themselves, reputable, credible, and relevant to your website. On the other hand, if the penalty is closely associated with the internal pages of your website, as what typically occurs in a Panda Google penalty, then you will need to work doubly hard on your on-page optimizations, particularly the quality and relevance of its content.

Now, understand that even though you have already instituted these measures in an effort to recover from the penalties imposed by Google, it definitely takes time before you can see any significant improvements in your search rankings. What you can only do is to keep on monitoring the effects of the changes that you have made on your website by using Google analytics as well as other ranking tools.

Getting a Google penalty is part and parcel of today’s need for greater accountability in the digital world. You may get a penalty but, at the end of the day, it is in how you manage these penalties to make a successful comeback that really matters.
