It’s a sure-fire way of ranking high in organic search results pages allowing you to drive more traffic to your website and generate more opportunities for conversion. However, if you are the type of person who would like to establish an online business that is going to be well-respected and highly valued not only by your target customers but also Google and the rest of the world’s search engines, then you should never get involved in black hat SEO.

As the term connotes, black hat SEO refers to search engine optimization techniques that are considered in gross contradiction to the ethical and good business practices that the world’s major search engines like Google wants all websites to observe. In short, black hat SEO is illegal SEO. And whenever you talk about something illegal, then it is something that you clearly don’t want to get involved in. Just like any illegal activity, getting caught simply means punishment. In the world of digital marketing, engaging in black hat SEO can severely affect your traffic or, worse, your website will be de-indexed entirely. This simply means that your website is gone forever.

For example, it is perfectly legal to have individuals write an honest review of your business especially your products and services. However, if you are going to entice them to write something good about your business by offering your users discounts or other freebies in exchange for their reviews, then it is considered black hat SEO. It is commensurate to unethical business practices and is never a good way of creating a reputable brand image.

There are a lot of reasons why black hat SEO is illegal. To put it in simple words, black hat SEO is pure deception, cheating, and thievery. In a world where consumers are exercising their consumer rights, engaging in highly fraudulent online activities is tantamount to lack of respect for the rights of others.

Proponents of black hat SEO don’t care if their website content does not make any sense at all. For them, what is important is for their website to rank highly in the SERPs. For many of these black hat SEO practitioners, they are more interested in numbers and in rankings. So, they may have software that can churn out articles upon articles for posting into different sites. They can spin articles or even plagiarize the content of highly reliable and trustworthy sites. If you read the content you won’t even understand a thing that they are saying. Internet users clicked on the URL because they think it contains valuable information. How would you feel if you realize that the website you visited is full of crap? You will feel betrayed, that’s for sure. And that is exactly what black hat SEO does.

Black Hat SEO Hides Texts

Once considered a gem by black hat SEO practitioners, today, there are fewer incidence of hidden texts. In this black hat SEO technique, certain words are purposely hidden by using a variety of methods. The words can be colored in the same color as the background so it is technically invisible to the naked eye. Some hide their texts by resizing the font to zero while others would resort to manipulating the CSS layout so that the text is positioned off the screen. The sole purpose of hidden texts is to increase the number of keywords for the crawlers to recognize but undiscernible to the reader.

Black Hat SEO Stuffs Content with Senseless Keywords

Known as keyword stuffing, this black hat SEO strategy shows utter disregard for correct grammar. What is important is to put in as many keywords and keyword phrases in the web content regardless of whether it conveys a message or not. A keyword density of anywhere between 2 percent and 4 percent is generally considered to be optimal. If it goes beyond the 4 percent, it is already considered keyword stuffing; hence, black hat SEO. Again, the purpose of this technique is to increase the chances of getting discovered by internet crawlers so they will be able to land high on SERPs. Do they care about the quality of the content? Sadly, no.

Black Hat SEO Creates Links to Websites with Questionable Reputation

Creating backlinks to highly reputable and trustworthy websites is key to improving your very own brand image. Regrettably, there are individuals who resort to using automated link farms to create a network of websites that will be linking with each other. The problem with these websites is that they lack the credibility and trustworthiness that Google is currently looking for. Moreover, since everything is automated, many of the traffic, likes, and comments in these websites are all fakes, churned out by robots and not by humans. Just think the Ashley Madison scandal where robots were allegedly used to automate responses to clients.

Black Hat SEO Cloaks URLs

Have you ever clicked on a URL only to be redirected to an entirely different content? This is black hat SEO using the technique called URL cloaking. In this technique, the website is coded to produce an image so that it will pass the scrutiny of crawlers. Sadly, when the URL is clicked by a user, the code kicks in to bring the user to an entirely different website and content. Talk about being tricked. This is one of the nastiest black hat SEO techniques you will ever encounter as it effectively deceives you.

There are other black hat SEO strategies being employed by some unscrupulous SEO people. Fortunately, Google and the rest of the search engines are beefing up their algorithms specifically to combat such deceitful techniques.

Should you engage in black hat SEO? It is best that you don’t.
